Our cars, more so than any other purchase we make in our lives, are not just a one and done deal. Far from it. Once you’ve paid for it initially (and if you got it on credit you can’t even do that) you have to think about ongoing costs.
From fuel to maintenance, cleaning to servicing, these costs are many. Some cars are rather cheap to maintain, while others are not. Often, there’s not much you can do about this, as it’s just like any other piece of machinery. The more you use it, the more likely it is to fail.

A properly serviced car has several major benefits. Firstly, your car will constantly be running at peak performance, so you won’t have to worry about breakdowns or failures. Secondly, it’ll make you a much more safe driver, as all your systems will be operating as expected.
Servicing is key, for these reasons and more. So, this in mind, here are several considerations and tactics you can put to good use, to make car servicing a more smooth process.

Think about car servicing before you buy!
Each brand and each model of car is different. This means that they are serviced in different ways, and that it takes a distinct set of skills to be able to service different brands. So, before you buy, you need to take into consideration the popularity of the brand and whether you can find someone with the skills to service it.
It’s easy to find where to service a Jaguar these days, for example, given the popularity of the brand. On the other hand, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to find someone who can service a 1966 Ford Cortina. It’s an extreme example, but the point still stands; the age and brand of your vehicle plays a large part in your ability to get it easily serviced.
Build up a rapport with your local garage
Getting friendly with the very people who service your car isn’t a bad thing. Staying local and building relationships makes it easy for your car to get fixed quickly the next time something goes wrong. It also helps you find someone trustworthy to handle your vehicle when needed. Our cars are expensive, and shouldn’t be left to just anybody.
Consult forums and review sites for recommendations
You could have dozens of different garages in your area, so how do you choose between them? Using the power of the internet, that’s how. Finding unbiased review sites and forums is tricky, but it can pay off. You’ll find plenty of honest opinions on various garages and mechanics, to help you make an informed decision.
Alternatively, you could play it safe. Official car dealers – i.e. a Ford dealer or a Mini dealer – may also offer servicing for their customers. It goes without saying that handing your car to someone who specializes in that brand is a smart idea. This eliminates the need to find a garage who may or may not be savvy with your particular ride.
